Well, the phone finally rang. Two Thursdays ago; the 15th to be precise. And while we were told that it could be at any time on any day, the normalcy of it all shattered all of the romantic fantasies that we had about the whole thing. We were actually in the middle of installing a window air conditioner into our guest bedroom in anticipation of Adrienne and Matthew’s visit for the Balloon Rally that weekend.
The phone rang in the other room just as we were holding the unit in place in the open window and putting the storm window down on top of it to hold it while we adjusted it in the front to be able to slide out the fins and pull down the inside window. Due to the routine-ness of the moment I told Tom that I could hold it for a moment while he answered it. It was probably something church related that would take a second and then we could continue. But the smile on his face said it all when he said, “Hi, Becky.”
At that moment the air conditioner had to hold its own as it sat propped precariously in the window. Don’t think we really would have cared if it had plunged to the ground or not! And I ran into the other bedroom to pick up a second phone.
We were chosen! Several weeks ago a woman in NYC chose our profile, but held onto it for a few weeks to make sure of her decision. And that day, that Thursday, she was sure – she wanted us to parent her baby girl! Of course at this most important moment in our lives, I was nowhere near any paper to write down the details, but thankfully I was able to find a card envelope inside my nightstand and a pen to write with.
And here is what we were told… the birthmother is a single mom who already has two other children. She lives just outside NYC and does not have a lot in this world. She and the birthfather are African American and she is due on September 1st (but known to go up to two weeks early!). She wants to meet us and then the details of her adoption plan will be made.
Wow – we were speechless. Here it was… the moment we had been waiting for. Eventually there were no more answers to our questions, only praises that this was actually happening. As we hung up with Becky, we immediately hugged each other out of joy and out of a sense to make sure that neither one of us was hallucinating! We made phone calls to our family and then, somehow, remembered to finish installing the air conditioner! We even had to make sure the next morning that it all wasn’t a dream. We concluded that our knowledge of dreams meant that we couldn’t have had the same exact one!
So – two weeks have passed and after many, many phone calls back and forth we have a date to meet the birthmother – Monday, August 9th. We will be travelling to Tom’s mother’s house which providentially is just outside of NYC in CT and then taking the train into Manhattan to the Bethany office to meet her.
We would ask for your continued prayers for us. No adoption is without it risks and anxiety, and this one is no exception. While the birthmother is completely ready to deliver and sign her baby to us to parent, the birthfather is not as “involved”.
Thank you all for your support and encouragement. While our road has not been an easy one – even lately, we are so grateful to God for his love, mercy and perseverance to grow us into all grace and glory! We look forward to keeping you all informed of our progress and joy!
